In the early 2000s, Martha Wofford joined a group of her fellow Johnson County Young Matrons on a field trip to visit the Shawnee Indian Mission. Like so many others, she’d driven by the Mission many times, but had just never stopped. So this was her chance. All it took was one visit. That very day, she discovered that her “heart belongs to the Mission.” Now, decades later, she’s still re-inventing the whole concept of field trips at the Mission.

October 23, 2026 from 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Homeschool families are invited to explore the Mission through hands-on learning, guided activities, and interactive experiences designed especially for homeschoolers. Students will take part in educator-led rotations, group exploration, and age-appropriate activities that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. Families are invited to stay at the Mission for a picnic lunch, grounds exploration and self-guided tours of the exhibits.SEE MORE EVENTS

History Comes Alive: Shawnee Indian Mission Methodist Cemetery
(Registration Required) $8 resident, $10 non-resident

A couple blocks away from the current Shawnee Indian Mission Historic Site sits a small Methodist Cemetery that shares a sidewalk with the bustling Shawnee Mission Parkway. Site historians and volunteers will share the stories of those buried in this historic cemetery, from a slave owner and county namesake, to a woman who connected the Johnsons and the Wornall into Kansas City history. Step inside the cemetery and learn about those buried in the only cemetery in Fairway.SEE MORE EVENTS

Cottagecore KC celebrates historic arts in a digital age, and they will be teaching fibers classes at the Mission! They want to keep traditional knowledge alive by teaching classes and workshops on a variety of fiber arts skills like scouring, processing, and spinning wool into yarn; knitting, weaving, and crochet; and harvesting/using natural dyes. All class supplies are included in the class fee and you even get to keep your drop-spindle or crochet needles after the class to continue your work at home.SEE MORE EVENTS
