The Beyond the Classroom Experience at the Shawnee Indian Mission is an interactive educational series that brings history, culture, and storytelling to life. Each session features engaging activities led by experts, including hands-on learning, demonstrations, and discussions. The series connects participants with Indigenous traditions, history, and perspectives in an immersive setting. Designed for all ages, Beyond the Classroom offers a unique opportunity to learn and experience history beyond textbooks.

The Frybread Man — Kimberly Tanskanen
Kimberly Tanskanen will share the delightful story of The Frybread Man, followed by a chance to sample authentic fry bread. Guests can purchase books for a memorable takeaway. The event will also feature engaging activities for all ages, as well as educational experiences that explore indigenous traditions, offering a deeper appreciation of First American cultures.

Join us for an engaging opportunity of interactive storytelling as Melissa Garrett, a Cherokee and Quapaw tribal member, shares The Great Ball Game. This traditional Native American tale explores the origins of lacrosse and the timeless lessons of teamwork, respect and the natural world.
