Report of the Delaware Indian School at the Methodist Mission for 1838

    The school commenced in January with 15 schollars [sic] for the year; for the first 3 months the average number was 20 schollars – In the spring our average number was 14, twelve of whom resided in the mission family, and were clothed and fed at the expence [sic] of the Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church; the other two ate dinner each day at the mission 12 schollars have been about our regular average number for the latter part of the year.

    Five of the schollars read·well and are commencing to write considerably The other 4 [?] spell tolerably well. The major part [_____?] schollar commenced in their alphabet, but have all gone through the Webster’s spelling book – except 2 of them – more than once.

    Our children all manifest quite a spirit of enterprise in reference to education. Several of the little Indian girls have learned to sew tolerably well and give evident marks of peculiar sprightliness.
