The 2025 Night at the Mission was truly an evening to remember—an inspired blend of history, community, and celebration that illuminated the enduring spirit of the Shawnee Indian Mission. Guided by the steady leadership of event chair Jenny Waldeck, this year’s event introduced a new twist: adult field trips that invited guests to experience the Mission’s history through hands-on learning and lively storytelling.

Participants explored a series of immersive stations across the historic grounds. They churned butter in the original cabin, discovered the art of bee harvesting once practiced on-site, and learned about the Mission’s iconic wagon—imagining what it was like to travel west across the country in the early 1800s. The Johnson County Young Matrons (JCYM) served as docents for the evening, graciously guiding groups and bringing each story to life through their knowledge and enthusiasm.

As the sun dipped below the trees, the evening transitioned into a festive gathering filled with great food, music, and purpose. Guests enjoyed Native American cuisine prepared by Chef Jason Champagne, known as The Native Chef, whose dishes celebrated indigenous ingredients and culinary traditions. The sounds of The Wildwood Boys, a local bluegrass favorite, filled the air and created a warm, welcoming backdrop for friends and neighbors to connect and unwind.

Thanks to the generosity of attendees—and the months of thoughtful planning by Jenny and her volunteer team—over $5,000 was raised in support of the Shawnee Indian Mission Foundation. These funds will help preserve the Mission’s historic buildings and support educational programming that keeps its stories alive for generations to come.

Mark your calendars now: next year’s Night at the Mission will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2026. Join us once again for an unforgettable evening of history, music, and camaraderie under the autumn sky.
