- Letter-1838, June 20-B
Transcribed letter to General Wm Clark St Louis Mission dated Jun 20, 1838
O. I. A.
June 20 1838
Sir
I enclose copies of letters & other papers. Submitted to this Depart. by the agents of the Missy Socy of the Methodist Episcopal Church, one copy of my letter to the Rev. Wm Johnson, which expresses the views of this Depart.
You will perceive that it is deemed all important; that the proposed Manual Labor School should be located within, the Indian country. And the Socy will use its efforts to obtain sites for the neceaary [sic] buildings improvements from some of the tribes, probably, within Major Cummins’ agency. You will instruct him, therefore, to give his cordial cooperation to their exertions, as the Dept feels great confidence in the utility of this plan, & great solicitude for its eventual success. Altho much time must elapse before the Society will be ready to receive pupils, it may be well for the agent to talk the matter over freely with the Indians, to make them understand what is to be done, & by thus giving them favorable impressions, prepare them to expend their treaty funds for education at this school. Please direct him to make full & frequent reports of the doings of the Society & its agents, & of the Indians.
Very etc.
Gen Wm Clark
