- Letter-1854, November 2
Thomas Johnson to J. Meeker.
.
Nov. 2, 1854.
I returned this evening from Fort Leavenworth and was glad to find a letter from you—
I have requested Bro. Meeks to endeavor to comply with the request of the Ottawas concerning their children—
As for the Hymns we shall not be able to make any additions please have about 250 copies struck off as you may think best—
The governor & his Cabinet passed here about two weeks ago & went up to Union Town and thence to Council Grove & I am told expected to go to Fort Riley, & thence to Fort Leavenworth— The last time I heard from him he spoke of ordering an election as soon as he returned to Fort Leavenworth, though it is not certain that he would at present do more than order an election for a Delegate to Congress & leave the Legislature for a future time— Should the Legislature be called together it is uncertain where it will be held. I have offered the governor one of our Buildings provided he can do no better but they are anxious at the new city of Leavenworth for him to hold it there so it is uncertain where it will be held and also uncertain whether it will be held at all this winter
The Surveyor general is at Fort Leavenworth & he proposes to run the Base line between the Two Territories this winter & then run a guide Meridian line across the Two Territories and also correction lines from that meridian to the State line in the months of March & April & then start about twelve or fifteen Surveyors to Townshipping & Sectionalizing about the first of May—
I have heard nothing about Treaties since I saw you—
I was sorry to hear of your affliction—hope you will soon be well—we are all well here
Yours truly
Thos Johnson
