  5. Letter-1863, April 29

Kansas City
April 29th 1863

Dear Sir

When I left Washington last Fall I did not think the Settlement of the S. M. L. School business would be delayed until this time. To my mind there does not appear any just cause for delay. The school has been kept according to contract as the official vouchers signed by the Agent of the govt. will show. It was suspended when you directed, and would have been suspended sooner if you had said so— And now after we have spent our money for the support of the School, a part of which we are paying interest on, for the Government to delay payment is doing us great injustice—

Please have the matter attended to and let me hear from you.

Yours with great respect
Thomas Johnson

Hon. W.P. Dole
Commissioner Indian affairs
