- Letter-1865, April 25-B
Washington D. C.
April 25, 1865
Hon. Jas. S. Speed
Attorney Genl, U. S.
Dear Sir
We have this morning learned from the Secy Interior that our claim to the Shawnee Mission land in Kansas has been referred to the President & that he has referred it to you. The paper which we put in was not intended as a full statement of our case, but simply as a means of obtaining a reasonable delay until we could make out a representation of it. We therefore request in the name of our large constituency that you will allow us a reasonable time for that purpose.
We are here from New York for the specific purpose of attending to this business, & would be glad to have an interview with you, if it suits your convenience, at this time.
