Washington City D.C.
February 24th 1845
Sir,
I herewith present to you a copy of the estimated expenses of the Indian Manual Labor School as made out by Mr. Peery the Superintendent for the year ending Dec. 31st 1844. The amount due said school by the Department up to the above date are as follows; viz.
As per | agreement of June 20th 1838 | $2500.00 | |
Do. | Do. | with Delaware Chiefs February 28th 1844 |
2844.00 |
Total — | 5344.00 |
I have the pleasure to inform you that the Institution never was in a more prosperous state; and that it has an increasingly good reputation in the country where it is located; both with the white and Indian population. Our society made its usual appropriation to its sup port at our conference in last October: But since that time a tornado passed over the place and injured our buildings and other property to the amount of probably not less than $4000. Besides this we are building an additional house of brick for the better accommodation of the female department.
With sincere respect
Your Obt. Serv’t
J.C. Berryman, Supt
Indian Mission Conference
Hon. T. Hartley Crawford
Com. Indian Affairs
