- Report-1851, June 19
Transcribed report on the activities of the Indian Manual Labor School Thomas Johnson, Superintendent Manual Labor School to Luke Lea, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Washington City dated Jun 19, 1851
.
F.L. Ind. M.L. School
June 19th 1851
Sir
In compliance with instructions, I have the honor to submit the accompanying documents Nos 1st and 2nd containing a full exhibit of our school for the Quarter ending June 30th 1851
You will perceive that the Report is made out a little before the close of the Quarter, because our annual vacation commences today,+ will continue two months.
The school has been in session ten months without any intermission. But we deem it proper to make out our Reports to the close of each Quarter of the fiscal year without any reference to the sessions and vacations of our school – as we have vacations only once a year.
Our Reports show that there have been, during the Quarter, in the male Department 32 scholars – in the female Department 37 – total 69 – which I believe is more than usual for the summer session.
You will perceive that the certificate of the Agent is not appended to the Report. The reason of this you will understand for you will doubtless have learned, before this page reaches you, that Col. Lee, our worthy agent was thrown from his horse on the 17th inst.+ died immediately.
Respectfully
Submitted
Thomas Johnson supt.
Hon Luke Lea, Com.
Ind. Affairs, Washington Cty.
