Transcribed report on the activities of the Indian Manual Labor School Thomas Johnson, Superintendent Manual Labor School to Geo W. Manypenny, Commissioner of Indian Affairs dated Jul 31, 1855

Shawnee M.L. School
July 31st 1855

Sir,

In compliance with verbal instructions recd from yourself we recd into our school during the past session scholars from the Ottowa tribe of Indians + also from the Wyandotts. Now I wish instructions from you whether we shall continue to receive the children from these tribes or not + if we receive them how many from each tribe shall we be authorized to receive. The Ottowas are poor and have no school priveleges therefore I would respectfully recommend that they be permitted to send their children. The Wyandotts are better provided for + if you permit them to send any at the expense of the Government, this permission should apply only to orphans.

Our school commences on the first day of Sept. + I should be glad to be informed on these matters in time to give notice to the Indians.

I have the honor to be yours
with great respect
Thos. Johnson

Hon. G.W. Mannypenny
Com. Ind. Affrs
