  5. Statement-1862,September 26-B

State of Missouri
County of Jackson

Nathan Scarritt make oath and says

I was the Agent of Rev. Thomas Johnson in effecting the contract between himself and the Board of Managers of the Missionary Society of the M. E. Church South, by which contract the said Johnson bought of the said Board the last of the three sections of land upon which the Shawnee Indian Manual Labor School is located. In order to effect said contract I went in person to Nashville Tennessee in the month of April A. D. 1861, and presented to the aforesaid Board of Managers at their Annual Meeting, a written proposition from the said Johnson stating the terms &c. upon which he would purchase the section of land aforesaid, and the said Board by formal and official act accepted said proposition and made provision for conveying the title of said land to said Johnson. I further certify that though no actual conveyance has been made yet the aforesaid contract between the two parties aforesaid is complete and firmly binding and that the title to the said section of land rightfully rests in said Johnson.

To all of which I certify as witness my hand and seal this the twenty sixth day of September A. D. 1862
