Transcribed report on the activities of the Indian Manual Labor School Thomas Johnson, Superintendent Manual Labor School to Luke Lea, Commissioner of Indian Affairs dated Sep 30, 1852
.
F.L. Ind. M.L. School
September 30th 1852
Sir,
I have the honor to submit to you the accompanying documents as the report of our school for the quarter ending Sept. 30th 1852.
The total number of scholars for the quarter has been ninety one (91); a larger number, I believe, than we have ever had before at the same time of year. The number would have been still greater, had we not felt it our duty to decline taking any more from the Ottawa+ Wyandott tribes, in order that we might have room for a few more from the Delaware and Shawnee Nations, because we think they have preference claims on the Institution.
You will perceive that most of the Scholars are set down as commencing on the 25th of August. This you will readily understand when you recollect that we have but one vacation in the year, and that included the month of July and Aug. up to the 25th.
Accompanying this report you will receive my account of disbursements for this quarter with vouchers.
I have the honor to be yours etc.
Thos Johnson Supt_
Hon Luke Lea
Com. Ind Affairs
